Introduction
The purpose of this project is to answer the question, “How and why are safe spaces distinct for different individuals?” Through this project, I want to showcase the ten safe spaces through ten individuals through an Instagram social media campaign. This campaign will consist of ten (10) Instagram Reels. This project is not to sell people on these spaces but rather to inspire them to find their own.
Audience Analysis & Selected Social platform
Audience:
18 to 25
Most individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 go through a transitional period known as emerging adulthood (Mahmoud, et al., 2012).
In this period of time, individuals develop skills for maintaining independence and self-sufficiency. Because of this, it can be stressful and anxiety-provoking as this is the first time a lot of these individuals are doing these activities by themselves, and that is why it is important to have a safe space to cope (Mahmoud, et al., 2012).
Platform:
I chose Instagram as my platform as the largest demographic is 18 to 24, and it promotes user-generated content (UGC), which is one of the main sources of engagement as I want my viewers to also show their safe spaces through the #MySafeSpace (Barnhart, 2023).

Strategy
Content Creation
Ten Instagram Posts- 10 Instagram Reels
Each post is dedicated to an individual with a unique safe space.
Videos will be 1-2:30 minutes.
#SafeSpace, #SelfGrowth, #YoungAdult, etc.
And a unique hashtag with the space such as #music and #reading.
Techniques to Encourage Engagement
If the participant is willing, I will share the content on their platforms, too. I will be inviting them to make a Collaborative post with the main page. This will help them reach their followers more easily.
I plan on using the main hashtag #MySafeSpace in all the posts and also using similar popular hashtags to help boost my content.

What worked?
The Reels that saw the most activity were those that were collaborative posts so that a larger audience could find them. What also worked was using Instagram's topics function so you can select from a set group of topics, giving my content its niche audiences. What also worked was that before the project launch, I was documenting the process from reaching out to participants to filming and editing on my personal account, which helped build engagement for the project. When I started the #MySafeSpace Instagram, I had 20 followers within a few hours.
What didn’t work?
I didn't capture enough B-roll footage for some of my videos. When I used my camera to film a B-roll, it wasn't as clean because the camera kept trying to focus constantly. However, when I filmed with my phone, the B-roll looked better. Regarding the web design, because I chose to use Carrd, I can only have the landing page and no other pages, making it a long scroll.
the future
My goal for this project is to expand its scope to showcase various community-based safe spaces and places that are creating safe spaces for individuals. I also aim to collaborate with companies that share the project's mission of inspiring individuals to find their safe space. Moreover, I plan to widen the age group of individuals that I will be featuring as safe spaces are for people of all age groups and not just restricted to young adults. Going forward, I will organize the project in the form of seasons, which will help me to have a clear vision for each season, for example, a season dedicated to a more mature audience or a season focused on the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
